Interpreting works of art produced in historical Asia with a focus on China, this introductory survey course will explore Buddhist architecture created in response to Chinese dynasties over the past 2000 years. Focusing in particular on the correlation between the artistic expressions from both China and India, we will strive to rethink traditional notions of the artistic, cultural and political basis of Buddhist architecture during the 2000 years. Readings will cover Buddhist monasteries, grottoes, pagodas (or stupas), and sutra pillars. The development of specific characteristics and functions within Buddhist architecture will be discussed using periodic, geographic and media-based concepts. We will also direct attention to the relationship between conventions within Indian and traditional Chinese art.
