ARTH2025 The art of the Baroque ca. 1560-1720 [Section 2A, 2024]

Course category2024-25

The term “baroque” evokes drama, passion, and conflict—all of which helped define the artistic movements which rose across Europe during the 17th century. Turbulent political and religious conditions shaped a new environment for artists, who in turn shaped new forms of artistic identity, paving the way for the modern concept of the “genius.” This course will examine Baroque art (including painting, prints, and sculpture) broadly across Italy, France, Spain, Flanders and the Dutch Republic. Discussions will explore the changing concept of “naturalism” in art, the artist’s studio, links between art and emerging science, and images of faith within and beyond the Counter-Reformation.

CCHU9007 Sexuality and Gender Diversity and Society [2024]

Course category2024-25

What is sexual and gender diversity? How does the experience of our own genderedness and sexuality define members of sexual and gender minorities as people, and shape our opinions about those people who do not share our experiences or who do not express their sexuality in the same ways as we do? In this course, which has the potential to be life-changing, we will look at these sorts of questions and we will do so while learning about (and in many cases meeting and talking with) people whose gender or sexuality places them on the fringes of mainstream society. People who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or asexual; transgender people and individuals who cross dress, or play with bondage, domination, use pornography, and/or are involved in commercial sex activities.
