The module introduces the concept of Green Infrastructure (GI) and its application in policies and practice in China. Using examples from China and international case studies the module  focuses on the design, development, and investment in GI the module examines the links, as well as the contestations, between the principles of landscape and urban sustainability and the implementation of these theories in practice. 

The module takes a purposefully broad approach to these debates integrating both conceptual and real-world examples from planning, geography, urban, environmental and landscape practice to present GI as a “polymath” term that is applicable to scenarios across the built and natural environment. By reflecting on these issues within contemporary Chinese development the modules explores how people, politics, economics, and nature are aligned to support GI investment in rapidly changing cities. 

The focus on the conceptual, spatial, disciplinary and temporal presentations of GI outlined in the academic, policy and practice literature are key to the module. Assessing landscape and urban change from multiple perspectives will provide a set of analytical lenses through which the form, focus and delivery of GI can be assessed against competing socio-cultural, political, economic and ecological needs. This is complimented through the discussion and deconstruction of the concept’s principles in international practice highlighting where synergies and diversity occurs alternative approaches to development.
