The art of the Northern Renaissance reveals a world in transition—from the emergence of new artistic techniques to major social and religious upheavals. This course will examine Northern European art (primarily Flemish, German, and French) of the 14th-16th centuries through the perspectives of craft, culture, religion, science, and economy. Discussions and readings will explore the rise of naturalism as a method and philosophy in art, changing depictions of class and labor, the rise of “genre” subjects such as peasant scenes and landscapes, the emergence of the print as a tool for both art and communication, and beyond. 

This course travels to Armenia to participate in an actual archaeological excavation.  Open to all undergraduates.
