This course is an advanced study aiming to allow students to explore and examine in details the different planning rationales, principles and strategies adopted in one of the international bay areas, and Tokyo Bay Area has been selected as the subject site this year. The course with the focus on Tokyo Bay Area consists of a series of lectures guiding students to identify the history and evolution of its planning system, to examine how its local culture, people and environment shape such system, and to broaden understanding on a few particular urban design aspects through exploration of successful built local examples.

This studio aims to produce redevelopment plans for the Kwai-Tsing Ports, albeit with a regional consideration of also advancing the Nansha Ports. As such, this studio responds to two broad directions on Greater Bay Area ports:

• First, to develop regional strategies to shift some port operations from Kwai-Tsing to Nansha, that can benefit both places.
• Second, to develop district-scale strategies to turn parts of Kwai-Tsing Port to a new waterfront community with jobs and housing.
