MECH7015 Rail accident investigation and derailment [2024]

Course category2024-25

Dear Students,

Welcome to the MECH7015.

This course aims at educating students of the know-how, skill set and techniques in modern railway accident investigation. This course will be easy to understand and learn.

The course covers case studies of major railway accidents internationally and in Hong Kong. The engineering principles, design calculations and real-life applications of wheel-rail interaction, flange climb, derailment mechanisms, crashworthiness of trains and on-site investigation will be discussed. For more details about the syllabus, please refer to the PowerPoints under the "Course contents".

A simulation exercise will be convened on lecture 10 (12 April 2025) in the class to stimulate students' understanding of the rail accident investigation skills.
